MM Vol 1 - 088 - Cher

Number 088

Cher

"Believe"

(1998)

.
Genre:Pop
In all of the history of music, Cher's comeback was as big as what Elvis did in Hawaii, Tom Jones singing about Sex (no) and Britney Spears out of rehab (if she ever does that, a comeback that is, i'll eat both my shoes with tomato sauce). Anyway what Cher did was nothing short of sensational, by not only changing her genre, but by doing it in a modern dance song that got the planet dancing.
Taking a cue from Madonna's Ray of Light, Cher goes Euro-disco on Believe, a platter of electro-beats and pulsating club rhythms. Working with a stable of competent European studio craftsmen, Cher moves through the beat factory, blending butt-shakers (like the title tune and "Strong Enough") and semi-ballads ("Dov'e L'Amore") into one endless thump session.
Since the mid-'70s, Cher has been known more for her acting than for her music, although she has continued to record for numerous labels, including Columbia, and in 1998 scored an international chart-topping smash with the club-friendly single "Believe." She is, by Garrett's analysis, more of a stylist than a singer, and almost as much a personality as an actress, almost a modern-day Helen Morgan (Showboat, etc.) with better luck in life and career. ~ Bruce Eder
