There is nothing better than a hungry, mournful & struggling rock star. They make the best debut albums. David Gray is a classic example of that, but then success makes them happy (does it? Nirvana & Inxs anyone?) and they lose that musical edge. "Break The Cycle" by Staind in 2001 was so personal not only to the creators but also to the listening audience. "Its Been a While" was immensely personal to me too, at that moment in time, it was my song. When i first heard the track i thought to myself "I could've written that" and to be honest .... i wish i bloody did.
"Its Been A While" is about addiction & I look at addictions two ways 1. Need 2. Want
This is the formula that anyone needs to analyse to justify. Do i need it or do i want it? I need to breathe, I want to breathe. Work it out. Personally i want the latest kamakooza 60 gigawatts IPod, but really, all i need is the one i have got. Hmmm ... it's 4.00pm, I want a beer because its to damn hot.

The song is probably the band's most well-known song, becoming a Top 40 Hit (#5) on the Billboard Hot 100. The song spent a second-best 20 weeks at #1 on the Mainstream Rock Chart (behind only "Loser" by 3 Doors Down) and a then record of 16 weeks on the Modern Rock Chart. The song is about singer Aaron Lewis's life and about how it's been a while since he's done a lot of things. He makes references to his previous drug addiction problem and failed relationships with several women. He mentions his father however he believes he only has himself to be blamed for his problems. The music video begins with Aaron Lewis going through some old photographs, one which happens to be an old girlfriend. The video then switches between him writing a letter to his girlfriend and the band performing casually in a room full of candles. There are brief shots of Aaron alone in the streets and looking at himself in the mirror while having second thoughts. Throughout the video, Aaron is seen continuously smoking a cigarette. At the end of the video, one of those cigarettes falls onto the floor and burns down his apartment. The video was directed by Limp Bizkit frontman, Fred Durst. The video was parodied by Bowling for Soup on their video for Girl All the Bad Guys Want. The pictures of the girlfriend are replaced by pictures of a dog. ~ [Source:Wikipedia]
