Just when you thought the Cult had hanged up their capes and boots, 2000 ad's mega hit film "Gone in 60 Seconds" produced an even bigger mega hit soundtrack with various artists and, a huh you guessed it ... The Cult came out of the retirement home, got off their mobility scooters and performed "Painted on my Heart". Poor old Cult fans had to double reach in the portaloos because the song was too soft .... awwwww, bless their little stainless steel hearts. To me, it was the 8th best song of the year (obviously) well except for the songs that made the Definitive 1000 of All Time from the year 2000) I liked the song back then & I still do today it has some very relevant lyrics. And who knows, the Cult might come out of retirement to do the soundtrack for the sequel "Gone in 1 minute"
Goth rock
Following a succession of name and stylistic changes, the Cult emerged in 1984 as one of England's leading heavy metal revivalists. Picking up the pseudo-mysticism and Native American obsessions of the Doors, the guitar-orchestrations of Led Zeppelin, and the three-chord crunch of AC/DC, while adding touches of post-punk goth rock, the Cult gained a dedicated following in their native Britain with mid-'80s singles like "She Sells Sanctuary" before breaking into the American metal market in the late '80s with "Love Removal Machine." Though the group managed one Top Ten in America with 1989's Sonic Temple, the band was plagued with off-stage tensions and problems that prevented them from retaining their popularity. The Cult split in 1995 following a pair of unsuccessful records, but returned on an occasional basis for new records -- always anchored by vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy. ~ [Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide]
